MAKE YOUR OWN CANDLES

Like many of our other Techno-Craft Classes, the skills you learn here will certainly enhance the atmosphere and mood at your home, make wonderful gifts for your friends and family, and can also be used to start up a new entrepreneurial business endeavor.

Candles have been used for thousands of years and up until the early 1900s were the single source for artificial light. Candles also have a rich tradition in religious services in many faiths throughout history. Today the candle is not often used as source of light, but is still used abundantly in religious services as well as in birthday celebrations, holidays, and home decorations, but most popularly for mood enhancing room fragrance and aroma-therapy.

Originally candles were made from animal tallow in the early Egyptian and Roman times. These early candles burned poorly and probably smelled even worse. The Roman Empire was the first to provide evidence of a candle that resembles the modern candle today. They melted the tallow until it was a liquid and poured it over fibers of flax, hemp, and/or cotton, which were used as a wick. These candles were used in religious ceremonies as well as lighting for their travel and homes.

Fast forward to modern times where candles are used exclusively for esthetics, ceremonies and celebrations. And today with the much more animal and environmentally friendly vegan waxes available, we can make marvelously fragrant, clean burning candles as wonderful mood-enhancers.
