Discover the Art of Perfume

Have fun learning to create handmade perfumes in a face-to-face workshop. We give you all the necessary material for the workshop. In the end you can take the finished product.

Our intention in this exciting class is to guide and motivate you into making your own natural perfume for your own personal use, to make as gifts for friends and family, or to start a new career or entrepreneurial venture.

History credits the ancient Egyptians with the invention of perfume, but it wasn’t created for vanity, prestige or to seduce a romantic partner back then, but rather to mask the foul odors of the very unhygienic people of those times. It is said that the first modern perfume, as oils blended in an alcohol solution, was made for Queen Elizabeth of Hungary in 1370. This perfume was a blend of lemon, orange blossom, thyme, and rosemary notes.

In France’s role in the mass production of perfume in the mid-1500s, their development of fragrances wasn’t romantic either, as this began in Grasse, which was then one of the smelliest towns in the country, as the flourishing tanning industry there filled the air with a stench that clung stubbornly to anything made from fabric or leather. To mask the smell on the best-selling leather gloves and garments, manufacturers sprayed them with perfume.

Fast forward to modern times, and it was the French who truly made it their own and later produced some of the world’s best-known fragrances. This was a long leap to now where Paris and Grasse in Provence are the main bases for French perfume manufacture and widely considered to be the world capitals of perfume. Ask anyone to name a perfume brand and the chances are that Chanel, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent or Guerlain will be first to come to mind.
